Take a good look

What do you see? What does anyone see in a mirror?

We think back to intervening years, when we first saw ourselves. Our parents never warned us we’d always be less than expected and more than we want. Age hides behind our eyes, ready to ambush with wrinkles and hangovers, and we wonder even more about what they didn’t tell us.

Take a good look. What do you see? What does anyone see in another person?

We think back to those intervening years, when we saw someone outside ourselves for the first time. We hadn’t learned, yet, to release our expectations, to want nothing from someone who wasn’t related by blood or debt. Now it’s fear that hides behind our eyes, ready to ambush with sleepless nights and circular disputes, and we question empty air, wonder what life hasn’t taught us.

Take a good look. What do you see? What does anyone see in the world?

We look forward to more intervening years, when we might find meaning as if for the first time. Who thought that the American Dream would not be enough, that hard work and perseverance would fall short of humanity? And it’s apathy that lies behind our eyes, ready to ambush with obligation and entertainment, while we wonder at the abuse of authority and how little outrage is worth.

Take a good look.

What do you see?
