Distance running

There are days when Anna wonders how many of her lives she passes by. One, two, three, four, and almost that one but she turned around and met someone else and by the time seven rolled around she was half a mile away and running. She thinks she’s tired of this, she can feel her lungs straining against a weight of endless choices, but Anna’s still curious and she’s still young and the boys still tell her she’s beautiful.

But Anna remembers what her mother looks like and she’s not counting any chickens, only the strides it takes to outdistance her might-have-beens.
